HEMODIALYSIS
TECHNICIANS
Overview: Hemodialysis Technicians may also be called
Renal Dialysis Technicians. This is a 280-hour program with 80 hours theory
and 200 clinical practicum. This program is designed to prepare students
for employment as a renal dialysis technician in hospitals, out-patient
dialysis centers or sub-acute units, and local employment agencies specializing
in the medical field.
The dialysis technician curriculum covers 3 weeks – 80 theory hours,
and 9 weeks - 200 clinical hours. The course is broken down into eight
modules as follows:
I. Today’s Dialysis Environment: An Overview
II. The Person with Renal Failure
III. Principles of Dialysis
IV. Hemodialysis Devices
V. Hemodialysis Procedures and Hemodialysis Complications
VI. Dialyzer Reprocessing
VII. Water Treatment
VIII. Vascular Access
Career Outlook: Renal dialysis technicians are in demand
in the health community. California Projections of employment states that:
Estimated number of workers in 2005 is 53,820 and estimated openings by
2005 are 6,160. Modern medical technology and spread of new diseases have
increased the demand for these health care services.
Admission Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- CNA of good standing
- Entrance test
- Physical examination (negative Hepatitis test and proper immunizations)
- CPR certified
